Shooting suspect turns himself in

Bond set at $500,000

Bond was set at $500,000 Saturday night for an 18-year-old Beckley man charged in the shooting of a Mountain State University basketball player.

Martrell Laviece Mitchell turned himself in to Beckley police earlier Saturday. He is charged with attempted first-degree murder, malicious wounding, two counts of wanton endangerment and conspiracy in the shooting of 22-year-old Alvin Mitchell.

Alvin Mitchell, no relation to the suspect, was shot early Thursday outside a Beaver Avenue residence that houses members of the MSU basketball team.

“We obtained a warrant for (Martrell) Mitchell Friday, but a family member actually brought him to the police department Saturday morning and he turned himself in,” said Capt. Jeff Shumate, chief of detectives.

Martrell Mitchell was arraigned Saturday night via teleconference from Southern Regional Jail. Raleigh County Magistrate Rick Jones set bond at $500,000 on the charges.

Jones explained Martrell Mitchell could face eight to 40 years in prison if convicted of all counts.

Police, meanwhile, say while the suspect is behind bars, the investigation is still ongoing.

“We’ll continue the investigation to see if anyone else should be charged in the incident,” Shumate said.

Alvin Mitchell, a Fort Lauderdale, Fla., native who transferred to MSU from the University of Cincinnati, was shot approximately eight times.

Detectives were able to speak with him Friday, and Sgt. David Allard said he confirmed the alleged gunman was the same person with whom he had been involved in a verbal altercation inside the Corner Shop on South Kanawha Street late Wednesday night.

The shooting occurred less than 30 minutes following the argument, when Martrell Mitchell allegedly exited a vehicle in front of the basketball residence and fired numerous shots from the street, Allard said.

Police said teammates transported Alvin Mit-chell to Raleigh General Hospital, and he was then airlifted to an undisclosed facility where he underwent surgery.

Allard said Mitchell was in stable but serious condition Friday.
