Winter weather advisory issued for parts of region

Meteorologists say most of southern West Virginia can expect a “white Friday” today.

A winter weather advisory has been issued for Greenbrier, Summers and Monroe counties.

According to National Weather Service Meteorologist Robert Stonefield, based in Blacksburg, Va., the high elevations in these counties could see 2 to 5 inches of snow.

Areas such as Lewisburg and Quinwood will see flurries and blowing snow, Stonefield said.

“After midnight (early today), the rain is expected to change into snow. The western slopes will grab most of the snow,” Stonefield added.

The snow should taper off this evening.

High temperatures will be around 30 to 35 in most areas. Temperatures will be in the upper 40s to low 50s Saturday. Sunday will be sunny with temperatures reaching 60 degrees, Stonefield said.

Fayette, Raleigh, Nicholas and Wyoming counties will also see a white Friday, said Tom Mazza, meteorologist for the NWS in Charleston.

Snow showers are expected this morning and will be more widely scattered in the afternoon. The snow will taper off into flurries this evening, Mazza said.

The eastern part of Nicholas County could see one to two inches. Fayette, Raleigh and Wyoming counties will see an inch or less, Mazza continued.

Winds gusts close to 30 mph are also expected, which will cause blowing snow in most areas.
