A Fayette County man was killed in a hoisting accident at a Newtown Energy coal mine in Kanawha County Tuesday morning.
In a statement issued by Newtown Energy, Charles Dixon, 53, of Fayette County was killed at approximately 7 a.m. at its Eagle Mine near Winifrede.
“A hoist rope on a slope car broke,” said Occupational Safety and Health Administration public affairs director Diana Petterson.
Petterson says Dixon was positioned at the slope bottom at the time of the accident.
He was reportedly struck by the hoist car, causing fatal injuries.
“Two other miners riding in the slope car when the hoist rope broke were also injured.
“Their injuries were not considered life-threatening,” Petterson added. “The slope car was being hoisted out of the mine at the time of the accident.”
Newtown Energy says it’s working closely with government officials on an investigation into the cause of the accident.
Dixon worked as a trackman with the mine since 2003. He first obtained his miner’s card in 1981.
"We are deeply saddened by this loss. Our thoughts and prayers are with Mr. Dixon's family right now," said Bob Ellis, Newtown Energy Inc.'s president.
This is the first fatality at a Newtown Energy Inc. mine, Ellis added.
