An explosion was reported in Coal City Wednesday, but authorities say only a motorcycle gas tank exploded during an outbuilding fire that was extinguished in a half hour.
Around 3 p.m., the Coal City Volunteer Fire Department was dispatched to a reported garage explosion on Darnell Lane, said Matthew Crawford, a firefighter and paramedic with the department. When 10 Coal City and Sophia City firefighters arrived on scene, they found an fully engulfed outbuilding that had a motorcycle inside.
The motorcycle’s gas tank did cause a small explosion, Crawford said.
The fire was extinguished 30 minutes after it was dispatched, Crawford said. No one was injured.
Crawford said the fire was apparently caused by a nearby trash burn that was left unattended.
The outbuilding sustained heavy damage and a vehicle parked nearby had minor damage. The motorcycle inside was a total loss.
