A beacon of light

Sue Britton looks on as Congressman Nick Joe Rahall, D-W.Va., presents her husband, Jeff Britton, with a plaque from the Kiwanis Club of Beckley Thursday afternoon at the Beckley Moose Lodge.

The plaque recognizes Britton for the 40 years he served as Key Club adviser for Woodrow Wilson High School.

Rahall, who graduated from WWHS in 1967, was a member of the Key Club and is an honorary member of Beckley Kiwanis. As a member of Britton’s Key Club, Rahall served as club president and won a national oratory competition.

Thursday, Rahall called Britton “a beacon of light for so many of our young people.” Though he had already retired from teaching, Britton only recently retired as the club’s adviser.

The Kiwanis Club, which sponsors high school Key Clubs, has yet to find an adviser to replace Britton at the school. Any school employee interested in the position should call Dan McClure at 304-787-3732.
