Paving causing delays in Shady Spring area

Motorists traveling U.S. 19 between Shady Spring and Daniels have been experiencing delays this week as crews contracted by the West Virginia Division of Highways pave weather-beaten roadways.

Dale Hughart, Raleigh County DOH supervisor, said workers so far this week have milled out the old asphalt from the entrance of Glade Springs Resort to the intersection of W.Va. 3 and U.S. 19.

Weather permitting, Hughart says, crews will begin putting down new pavement this morning.

“The road was all to pieces,” Hughart said, adding the project began in the fall with the pavement of U.S. 19 from the area of Heiner’s Bakery in Daniels to Glade Springs. “It really was in terrible shape then and the winter just tore it up.”

Hughart says motorists have experienced delays of 20 minutes or more this week.

“There’s a lot of traffic out there,” he said, explaining 30,000 cars travel that route each day.

Although he says he knows the delay is inconvenient, Hughart is asking that drivers stay patient through the end of the week. Barring inclement weather, he says, crews should have the work finished Saturday.
