The National Weather Service is predicting snow showers on and off all day today into Wednesday morning.
According to Nick Webb, meteorologist for the National Weather Service in Charleston, the Raleigh and Fayette areas could see up to an inch or two; however, they’re expecting accumulations to be mostly seen in areas at higher elevations of 2,500 feet or more.
Webb says whatever snow does fall will likely melt as soon as it hits the ground because the ground is still warm. He says most accumulations will be seen on vehicles and other cool surfaces.
According to Webb, it’s a little unusual to see snow this early in the year, but not unheard of.
“It can happen. We are in October, which is when you get these big arctic air outbreaks and we can get this with the northwest flow.”
Webb said it should get into the upper 30s today, especially west of Beckley.
He said the temperature will have a negative effect as far as accumulations go.
“Combine warm ground with snow — it will be hard to get anything to really stick. If it does stick, it will melt during the day as you get maximum solar heating.”
