Victim not yet located

Fayette County authorities continued their search Thursday for a man who reportedly jumped to his death from the New River Gorge Bridge.

The man apparently jumped from the bridge Wednesday afternoon. The search for his body was suspended at dusk and resumed Thursday morning.

Sheriff Bill Laird noted it was not unusual for a river recovery operation to last several days.

Meanwhile, no one has seen or heard from the man authorities believe jumped from the bridge, Laird said. His next-of-kin have received preliminary notification. However, the man’s identity cannot be confirmed until the body is found.

Laird said the preliminary investigation indicated the victim was possibly from out-of-state.
