Donations sought for John Henry theme park

The John Henry Historical Park Steering Committee is asking for donations to help with the development of the planned 26-acre, family-oriented theme park.

Committee member Bill Dillon, who also serves as president of John Henry Days, says the park, which to be located in Talcott, will feature a replica of the town’s old train depot as well as a museum with historical information about Henry, who is said to have won a race with a steam drill during the construction of the Great Bend Tunnel in 1872.

Also, Dillon says, the committee hopes to acquire the tunnel, which has not been used since 1974.

Dillon says the plan is to put a small steam train inside and offer rides through the tunnel and park, ending at the welcome center.

Once completed, Dillon said he believes the park will become an economic boon to Talcott, Summers County and surrounding areas.

“We think it will attract a tremendous amount of tourists to the area,” he said.

In an effort to raise money, the committee is selling bricks which will be part of a wall leading into the park. For $100, anyone interested can purchase a brick and have the name of a loved one, or name and message up to 48 characters, inscribed.

Those wishing to make donations will receive plaques distinguishing between levels of bronze, silver, gold and platinum donors.

All donations are tax-deductible. Checks should be made payable to John Henry Park and mailed to Hinton Area Foundation, P.O. Box 217, Hinton, WV 25951.
