Woman charged with child neglect creating risk of injury

OAK HILL — An Oak Hill woman was arrested for the alleged neglect of her infant child, according to Fayette County Sheriff’s Department.

Tara Louise Harris, 30, was arrested Thursday morning and charged with the felony offense of gross child neglect creating the risk of bodily injury.

The Fayette County 911 Center dispatched deputies on a call around 10 a.m. for a small child who was wandering in the street in the Terry Avenue area of Oak Hill.

Upon arrival at the scene, deputies found a young child wandering in and around the roadway with no apparent adult supervision. No age was given, but police described the child as a “toddler.”

Harris was arraigned in Fayette County Magistrate Court and released on $3,500 bond. Child Protective Services Division of the Department of Health and Human Resources was contacted and responded to the scene to take protective custody of the child.

“Parents have a duty and a responsibility to care for their minor children,” Sheriff Steve Kessler said. “Allowing a child this young to wander away from home unsupervised, particularly near a busy roadway, is a tragedy waiting to happen.”

This incident remains under investigation by Sheriff’s Deputy R.D. Stephens. Anyone with more information about this incident is asked to call 304-574-4216.
