Annual Celebrity Night to benefit area United Way

From Staff Reports

BECKLEY — Twenty-five years ago, Debbie Short, then the executive director of the Women’s Resource Center, met with Judy Lilly Harrah and Susan Landis to plan an event to raise money for the center. Celebrity Night was conceived, planned and executed with such success that the tradition continues.

There were four restaurants participating the first year; Foster’s is the only one of the four still at its original location that is among the 10 venues featured this year. City National Bank and Groovy 94.1, the corporate hosts, will be joined by Harrah and Landis to celebrate this anniversary Monday from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Foster’s Main Street Tavern in uptown Beckley.

Each of the participating restaurants will offer a variety of special activities designed to entertain and raise funds for United Way of Southern West Virginia and the Women’s Resource Center.

At Foster’s, patrons will have an opportunity to buy chances to enter City National’s “Money Machine,” win a money tree, receive assorted prizes in a quarter pitch game, and enjoy karaoke provided by the talented Meagan Iddings.

Famous auctioneer Charlie Houck will sell a 10K gold “Flying Eagle” pendant and a beautiful 14K gold Byzantine bracelet. For a significant donation, Houck may be persuaded to deliver one of his famous jokes.

Ted Morrow of Groovy 94.1 will serve as the MC for the evening and provide top hits of the ‘80s for your listening pleasure.

Chances  to win a 14K gold, 1-carat diamond cluster ring valued at $1,675 will be sold at all of the participating restaurants.

The tips given to the volunteer wait staffs will be donated to United Way and WRC. Tips given by check that evening or delivered in advance can be used as a charitable deduction on the donors’ federal tax returns.

“This event has always offered members of our community an opportunity to be entertained, enjoy a meal and share an evening in the company of friends,” noted Harrah and Landis. “At the same time we are we are giving back to the place we live and work. I hope many of our friends and acquaintances will join us at Foster’s or support one of the nine other Celebrity Night venues.”

Restaurants participating in the 2013 Celebrity Night are Applebee’s, Boston Beanery, Bunker’s Sports Bar, Calacino’s, The Dish Café, El Mariachi (Beaver), Foster’s, McBee’s, Pasquale’s and Texas Steakhouse.

If you will be out-of-town, you can make a check out to United Way of Southern West Virginia with “Celebrity Night” on the memo line and mail it to United Way, PO Box 5456, Beckley, WV  25801 or give it to a participating corporate sponsor or volunteer server.
