“He who plants a tree loves others besides himself.”

— English proverb

BECKLEY — The customary way to celebrate Arbor Day is to plant a tree. Children watch as Allen Waldron, left, with the West Virginia Division of Forestry, and Sherrie Hunter, right, with Make it Shine, plant a tree in front of Lollipops and Lullabies Daycare on Dry Hill Road. National Arbor Day was Friday, although each state has its own state holiday — West Virginia’s is April 12. The sugar maple is our state tree. The holiday originated in Nebraska in 1872, when an estimated one million trees were planted.
