New River to host 3 tech center events Feb. 21

GHENT — The New River Community and Technical College Advanced Technology Center in Ghent will be buzzing with activity Feb. 21, as three free public events will take place simultaneously.

New River’s Business Opportunity Center will host the second annual Small Business Summit from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. According to Jill Holliday, instructional specialist for entrepreneurship and tourism, the Business Summit will feature a trade show-style format with presenters speaking on a variety of topics.

Leading off the program at 10 a.m. will be an overview of the Summit Bechtel Family National Scout Reserve and 2013 National Scout Jamboree from David Kopsa, assistant manager of programs for the Reserve. Kopsa works with the Boy Scout volunteers responsible for the program at the 2013 Jamboree.

Other presentations will include the Small Business Development Center offering tips for understanding the basics of financial statements; the Robert C. Byrd Institute with an update on the new Third District Accelerator that will provide a wide range of new opportunities for business growth in tourism and advanced manufacturing; and Tamarack artisan Stephanie Danz, owner of Mountain Art Glass, discussing how she got started and the process involved in having work accepted by Tamarack.

Running concurrently with the Small Business Summit will be a Green-Up Job Fair sponsored by Region 1 WorkForce West Virginia and New River. Anyone interested in learning about career opportunities in green businesses and industries is invited to attend.

Among the companies scheduled to participate are HSC Industrial;  Adventure Communications Inc.; Appalachian Heating;  West Virginia Division of Rehabilitation Services of Princeton, Beckley, and Oak Hill; United Bank; Lowes of Princeton, Mabscott Supply and Enterprise Rental Cars.  New River also will have representatives from its Office of Career Services and the Office of Enrollment Services on hand to answer questions and assist visitors.

If your business or organization would like to participate, a table and chairs will be provided for you to display information. Set-up will begin at 8 a.m. A vendor lunch will be provided upon request at a cost of $10 per person. Finally, the day’s events will include a Community Fair where New River students and visitors from the community will also have the opportunity to learn about area business and nonprofit agencies that provide goods and services that could be beneficial to them.

Exhibitors will include the Beckley Fire Department, the UMWA Career Center, the New River Community and Technical College Foundation, Raleigh County DHHR, American Red Cross and Raleigh General Hospital.

    The mother and stepfather accused in the death of a 2-year-old boy were among the 89 indictments handed down by the Raleigh County Grand Jury.
    Brandy Smallwood, 28, and James Green, 24, both of Fairdale, were charged Feb. 10 in connection with the death of 2-year-old Graydon Morgan.
    Green was indicted for first degree murder, death of a child by child abuse, child abuse resulting in serious bodily injury, child neglect resulting in death and child neglect resulting in serious bodily injury.
    The indictment against Smallwood if for death of a child by child abuse, child abuse resulting in serious bodily injury, child neglect resulting in death and child neglect resulting in serious bodily injury.
