International medicine to be presented Tuesday at WVSOM

As part of Celebrate Osteopathic Medicine week, the community is invited to attend a presentation in Lewisburg on international health care. The event will be staged in the Center for Technology and Rural Medicine on the campus of the West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine Tuesday from 5 to 8 p.m.

Drs. Thomas and Karen Asher, who are the directors of Kamakwie Wesleyan Hospital in Sierra Leone, will be the featured speakers. Thomas Asher is a 1987 graduate of WVSOM.

Kamakwie Wesleyan Hospital (KWH) serves a population of more than 600,000 people and is the only inpatient medical facility in a 50-mile radius. Doctors make monthly visits to the hospital’s four clinics to see patients and refer cases to the inpatient facility, as needed.

Karen Asher is a family doctor and the consulting physician in the UNICEF Stabilization and Treatment Center for Malnutrition and the pediatric and adult HIV/AIDS treatment program at KWH. She also teaches chemistry at the Kamakwie Senior Secondary School, where her husband teaches biology.

Thomas Asher treats patients and performs surgeries at KWH, as well as teaching medical and nursing students. He serves as chairman of the Bombali District Community Health Board and sits on the Wesleyan Health Care Board.

The Ashers’ presentation at WVSOM is free to the public. No pre-registration is required.

Parking for the Center for Technology and Rural Medicine can be accessed via entrances off Greenbrier Street or Dwyer Lane. The building is between the Clinical Evaluation Center and the Roland P. Sharp Alumni Conference Center.
