Appalachian feast planned

FAYETTEVILLE — Deer and beer WILL harmonize like two fine fiddles Friday at the Appalachian Dinner & Beer Pairing at Adventures on the Gorge.

The rafting resort outside Fayetteville has organized a series of four food and wine pairing events this winter, each with a different theme. The Appalachian food, though, cried out for a more casual beverage.  

“We thought the Appalachian theme would be more fun with a beer pairing, especially since we have so many local breweries,” says P.J. Stevenson of Adventures on the Gorge (AOTG).

Bridge Brew Works, Morgantown Brewing Co. and Mountain State Brewing Co. supply the suds and Smokey’s on the Gorge — AOTG’s signature restaurant — serves up the vittles.

The event is also a chance to check out the restaurant’s new year-round digs.

AOTG replaced the roll-up canvas walls at Smokey’s with glass windows, a remodel that allows them to hold events throughout the winter.

"Besides the fantastic food, the view with the new windows is pretty spectacular,” says Stevenson.

Here’s what’s for dinner:

For the first course, West Virginia pan fried trout with brown butter is paired with Almost Heaven Mountain Amber from Mountain State Brewing in Tucker County.

To follow it up, a Bridge Brew Long Point Lager, local to Fayetteville, washes down a wilted lettuce salad with warm ramp vinaigrette.

The main course includes sautéed venison medallions with blackberry demi, fried green tomatoes, colcanon (braised cabbage, kale, onion, and bacon), au gratin potatoes, cheddar biscuits and corn muffins with churned butter.

The main is paired with Morgantown Brewing’s Eighty Shilling Scotch Ale.

And finally, Morgantown Brewing’s Alpha Blond Ale meets a strawberry rhubarb pie for desert.

Rezan Nese and Dexter Burgess, the chefs at Adventures on the Gorge, will prepare the evening’s meal. Larry Poli, AOTG’s Food and Beverage director, designed the menu.

December’s dinner paired wine with a Greek feast.

February features Italian food and, in March, the tide turns to seafood.

The price of the four course meal and beer pairings is $35.
