Beckley is the choice for proposed veterans nursing home

Bill had first reading in Senate Thursday and is expected to pass Monday

CHARLESTON — The bill proposing a veterans nursing home in Beckley near the Jackie Withrow Hospital was on first reading in the State Senate Thursday evening, after moving from the Committee on Finance earlier in the afternoon.

Sen. Mike Green, D-Raleigh, who proposed the legislation, said the bill was not surrounded by the usual politics.

“A lot of times when we deal with regional issues, people become protective of their own regions,” Green said. “That was not the case with this.”

He said the veterans coalition unanimously chose Beckley for the 120-bed veterans long-term care facility.

The bill calls for a land donation from the Department of Agriculture, which owns 15 acres near the hospital on Eisenhower Drive.

Green expects construction of the facility to bring jobs to the area.

“I think it’s not only a win-win for Beckley and Raleigh County, but a way to thank veterans for their service,” he said.

The bill is on second reading today.

“Monday, we should pass it,” Green said.
