However, today will be the first day of school for students at Park Middle School in Beckley, and Independence High School, Independence Middle School and Coal City Elementary School in Coal City.
Although Wednesday was the first official day of school in Raleigh County, students at the Coal City locations learned Wednesday morning that the a power outage had canceled classes at their schools.
Park Middle School was closed due to renovations, according to assistant county superintendent Nelson Spencer. Spencer said all problems had been addressed Wednesday evening and all schools will be operating on regular schedules today. See related story on Page 2A.

A fun day at school
Students who participated in a school fundraiser at Cranberry-Prosperity Elementary School sprayed their principal Becky Smith during a hot Friday. Smith was decked out in flippers, goggles and floaties during the fun. Smith paraded past students as they drenched her with water guns.
