To celebrate its 100th Year Anniversary, Grand Home Furnishings donated more than $5,000 worth of furniture to Beckley Appalachian Regional Healthcare Hospital.
David Chinn, general manager for Grand’s Beckley store, explained that instead of celebrating the company’s milestone by having a big sale like other stores, the nationwide chain wanted to “give a big thanks to local communities in a way that would benefit women, our primary customer base.”
Leather couches, recliners and wooden rockers were delivered March 3.
Chinn said he contacted the hospital because it was a nonprofit organization and asked if it needed new furniture.
“They had 10 rooms in pediatrics and only two rocking chairs, so we donated eight of those,” he said.
He then noticed the waiting room which services pediatrics needed couches and end tables.
Ted Weigel, West Virginia marketing and service excellence manager for Appalachian Regional Healthcare Inc., said the rockers in pediatrics will offer a soothing environment for mothers and babies.
He said Grand Home Furnishings also donated leather recliners for the infusion therapy area where people must sit and take IVs, like chemotherapy.
“Infusion therapy is pretty tough, so the new recliners will really make that hard experience easier,” he said.
Weigel also said the three nurse managers involved have been “absolutely thrilled. They are very dedicated and believe strongly in enhancing the patient experience. Our patients and families will really benefit from this, and we are very grateful.”
He noted the gift has been a “real morale booster.”
Chinn said donations will be made to the community three more times throughout the year.
