Winding Gulf

More than 30 tourists from Maryland enjoyed a tour of Winding Gulf Wednesday.

The tour bus, booked by a Pennsylvania-based company through West Virginia Enterprises and local historian/actress Karen Vuranch, took the seniors through Sophia and surrounding historic coal camps, making stops in Helen and Stotesbury.

Traci Lewis, president of the Winding Gulf Restoration Organization, narrated the tour, which included a pinto beans and cornbread lunch at the Stotesbury Community Church hosted by Pastor Mark Hatfield and deacon Tom Cox.

Wednesday’s tour ended at the Beckley Exhibition Coal Mine, pictured here.
