‘Laundry and Bourbon’ opens at Raleigh Playhouse Friday

BECKLEY — The Raleigh Playhouse and Theatre will open its fourth production, James McLure’s “Laundry and Bourbon” starting Friday at 8 p.m.

Tickets are $10 and showtimes include Friday at 8 p.m., Saturday at 8 p.m., Sunday at 4 p.m., July 18, 19 and 20 at 8 p.m., July 21 at 4 p.m. and July 25, 26 and 27 at 8 p.m.

The play takes place on the front porch of Roy and Elizabeth’s home in Maynard, Texas, on a hot summer afternoon.

Elizabeth and her friend Hattie are whiling away the time, folding laundry, watching television, sipping bourbon and Coke and gossiping about the many open secrets which are so much a part of small-town life.

They are joined by the self-righteous Amy Lee, who can’t resist blurting out that Roy has been seen around town with another woman.

While the ensuing conversation is increasingly edged with bitter humor, from it emerges a sense of Elizabeth’s inner strength and her quiet understanding of the turmoil which has beset her husband since his return from Vietnam.

He is wild and he is unfaithful, but he needs her and she loves him, and she’ll be waiting for him when he comes home — no matter what others may say or think.

Elizabeth Caulder will be played by Heather Oiumette; Hattie Dealing will be played by Olivia Merritt; and Amy Lee Fullernoy will be played by Caroline Bach.

All seating is general admission and first come first served on the days of the productions.

The box office can be reached at 304-763-7059 from noon to 4 p.m. Wednesday through Friday or one hour before any showing to purchase tickets.
