BRAMWELL —
The Mercer County Sheriff’s Department is investigating the cause of a wreck that killed one motorist and severely injured two others on U.S. 52, north of Pinnacle Rock State Park, Tuesday at 6:30 a.m.
Mercer County Sheriff’s Deputy W.E. Rose said the 27-year-old driver of a Hyundai Tiburon was dead at the scene while a 13-year-old child and a 38-year-old woman, both of North Carolina, were transported to Bluefield Regional Medical Center with severe injuries.
Rose said the child was suffering from broken elbows and internal injuries while the woman was suffering from a severe leg fracture and possibly other injuries. After being transported to Bluefield Regional, both subjects were airlifted to another hospital. Rose said they were both “alert and talking” at the scene of the accident.
According to Rose, the accident occurred when the Tiburon, which was traveling northbound, apparently veered into the southbound lane, striking a Ford Focus. Rose said the sheriff’s department was still investigating what caused the Tiburon’s driver to drift into the wrong lane.
The highway was shut down between 6:30 a.m. and 11 a.m. while police and rescue services worked the accident.
