BECKLEY —
Theater West Virginia is one step closer to moving into the Soldiers Memorial building after a Tuesday decision by the Raleigh County Commission.
The commission signed an agreement to lease the facility to TWV, which is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year, to Theater West Virginia for 20 years. The lease will be renewed each year.
Commission President John Humphrey says that once TWV is up and running, it will be responsible for maintenance and repair.
“As far as that goes, they can get grants for this,” Humphrey said.
The commission originally placed the building into the hands of TWV on July 22 and Humphrey said having TWV in Beckley will be an asset to the town.
“I hope they will have great performances there along with their seasonal deal at Grandview,” Humphrey said. “This will be a tremendous boost for uptown Beckley.”
The Raleigh County Courthouse, along with several other county facilities, are going green after the commission signed a 15-year contract with Johnson Controls Inc.
Humphrey said energy savings will reach $2.4 million by the end of the contract.
Energy improvements will include everything from lighting, water fixtures to new energy controls, Humphrey said. The courthouse will have a state-of-the-art heating and air-conditioning system installed as well.
“This will be financed through low interest funding, some of which is through the energy efficiency conservation block grant which is from stimulus funding,” Humphrey said.
