Just as Coalwood and Rocket Boys history will linger in the minds of people across the state and nation, so will the presence of the October Sky Rocket Boys festival linger in Beckley.
Painted fire hydrants and donations to the United Way of Southern West Virginia will keep the memories fresh.
Festival director Scott Hill said the festival, which wrapped up on Sunday, “brought people from all kinds of places to stay in West Virginia.”
Final votes have been counted in the fire hydrant competition and taking first place was the Friends of Coal Ladies Auxiliary Hydrant. Beckley Gymnastics came in second; New River Community and Technical College, third; Woodrow Wilson Flying Eagles Marching Band, fourth; Janie Flanagan, fifth; Tomi Peck, sixth; Mary Kay Cosmetics, seventh; Beckley Area Derby Dames, eighth; ACT of Beckley, ninth; and Coal Heritage Highway Authority, 10th.
Hill also announced that it appears the Rocket Boys Festival will meet its goal to raise 1 percent of United Way’s $500,000 campaign goal.
Proceeds of the hydrant competition are nearing that goal of $5,000, he said.
Beckley will again host the October Sky Rocket Boys Festival next year Oct. 4-6.
