Several members of the Beckley Area Derby Dames presented a $500 check to the Women’s Resource Center Wednesday morning.
“Any donation we get, from classrooms that collect pennies to the $20,000 Mary Kay grant, all of it allows us to provide free and confidential services,” said Dee Sizemore, public relations and fundraising development coordinator of the Women’s Resource Center.
“We were expecting to get a donation from the Beckley Area Derby Dames because at every home bout, they give 10 percent of ticket sales to a local non-profit organization and we were selected for their last home bout. We never dreamed it would be $500 though.”
Kelly Elkins, aka Burn N Kell, said there are personal and heartfelt reasons why the dames chose the Women’s Resource Center as the primary charity for the Slaybor Day bout.
“Some of our teammates have experienced domestic violence or are close to someone who has been hurt or killed by a violent act at the hand of a loved one or acquaintance,” Elkins said.
“We want the Women’s Resource Center to be around as long as the need is there, which we all hope won’t be forever.”
Sizemore said these women provide a great example for the girls in the community.
“They are truly amazing women.”
The Beckley Area Derby Dames have also made donations to the Raleigh County Humane Society and Just for Kids.
