Blessing of the Animals slated Saturday in Hinton

Blessing of the Animals will be held for the third year Saturday at 4 p.m. at the shelter in Bellepoint Park, Hinton.

The event coincides with the birthday of St. Francis of Assisi, who was born on Oct. 6, 1182. He was the son of a wealthy cloth merchant in Italy. During his recovery, after being wounded in battle, he rejected that way of life to follow Jesus. He gave away all he had, and was disowned by his father, but gathered a substantial following.

He lived in poverty, but close to nature and to God. He was in tune with the sun and the stars and the animals. It is said that he preached to the birds and the birds listened to him, and that he tamed the wolf that had been terrorizing the city. Thereafter, the wolf was fed by the people of the town and they were no longer threatened.

St. Francis is the patron saint of animals and the environment. There will be St. Francis medals for all the animals.

There will be a short service with blessings for the animals and their owners. There will be music by Jordon Hart playing guitar and Patty Grady playing bagpipes. There will be animal books for the children, drinks, information, stories, dogs for adoption and prizes. Prizes will include one for the most unusual animal.

Animals must be on a leash or in a cage. All animals and their people are invited to the event.

It is sponsored by the Just Christians organization, a collection of people in Summers County from various churches that honor and serve God.
