Monroe County applies for public safety type grants

The Monroe County Commission is waiting to hear a response to two grant applications that have public safety implications.

According to County Clerk Donald Evans, an application was made for a court security grant for approximately $160,000. If awarded, the funds will be used for security upgrades in the county’s magistrate offices.

A separate grant would bring in $56,000 to enable the Monroe County Sheriff’s Department to maintain prevention resource officers (PROs) in James Monroe High School as well as Peterstown Middle School.

County officials hope to receive good news about both grants in the near future, Evans said.

During Wednesday’s county commission meeting, Commissioner Clyde Gum Jr. raised the possibility of the county acquiring the former Board of Education office in Union to use as storage space. Evans was authorized to contact the superintendent of schools with an inquiry about the feasibility of such a transaction.
