— Despite unfavorable weather conditions, the United Way of Southern West Virginia and Women’s Resource Center collected record donations during Monday’s 25th annual Celebrity Night.

United Way Executive Director Margaret Ann O’Neal said the total amount collected was $40,000, $10,000 more than last year’s record amount.

“It is truly amazing that on a a rainy night we raised more than we ever have at Celebrity Night,” said O’Neal.

“It speaks volumes of the kindness of our community and of our businesses, who stepped up and made sure this 25th annual event was special and fun,.” she added.

O’Neal said a total of $3,000 was raised by raffling a beautiful diamond ring valued at $1,700.

The lucky winner was Angie Woods Melton, she said.

“We are thankful and appreciative for those who came out and ate and for the real heroes of the night — our area partners who acted as wait staff and donated their tips,” she added.

Hundreds of individuals attended the event at area restaurants across Raleigh County.

Bunker’s Sports Bar at The Resort at Glade Springs again raised the most money.

But two new area restaurants raised the second and third most funds that will be shared between the United Way and the Women’s Resource Center.

Boston Beanery, with business partners from Crossroads Mall and United Bank, was runner-up and The Dish, with new business partner Shear Style, raised the third greatest amount.

Other locations participating were Applebee’s, Calacino’s, El Mariachi, Foster’s Main Street Tavern — the only founding Celebrity Night restaurant remaining involved — Pasquale’s, Texas Steakhouse and McBee’s.

Other business partners who supported the event through donations and volunteerism include 59 News, Jim Lively Insurance, Crossroads Chevrolet, First Community Bank, Boy Scouts of America, BJW, Spartan Sports, Chase Bank, Beckley Newspapers, City National Bank, Groovy 94.1, New River Community and Technical College, WOAY, 103CIR, Raleigh General Hospital, BB&T, The Raleigh Playhouse, WVVA, My 105.9, and Ramey Automotive.
