Ex Logan official, 3 men face arson, fraud charges

LOGAN — A federal grand jury has indicted a former Logan city councilman and three others on claims that they purchased a vacant building, inflated its worth on an insurance policy and burned it down.

Former councilman James Gregory Glick, businessman Guy R. Miller, insurance company operator William Janey Thompson and Shawn Simon were indicted Friday on mail and wire fraud and various other charges. The indictments were unsealed on Tuesday.

Glick owns 317 Steakhouse. The indictment claims Thompson, who runs Baisden & Associates, purchased a building across from the steakhouse in December 2011 for $45,000 then sold it the following month to Glick for $50,000. The indictment claims an unnamed co-conspirator helped set up the scheme and paid Thompson $75,000 for participating.

Prosecutors claim Thompson obtained an insurance policy for Glick citing that the building was worth $1 million. Miller — who owns an exotic dance club and a vacuum sales and service business in Logan — and Simon, his cousin, allegedly agreed to douse the building in gasoline and set it on fire on Feb. 1, 2012 for $75,000.

Prosecutors claim Glick split the more than $1 million proceeds with the men.

Glick appeared briefly in federal court in Charleston on Tuesday. He will remain in custody until his arraignment on Friday. His attorney, James Cagle, didn’t immediately return a telephone message seeking comment.

It was not immediately clear whether the other men had attorneys. Court hearings were not immediately scheduled for them.

The men face charges of mail and wire fraud, arson and obstruction of justice, among other charges.
