HINTON —
The Summers County Commission approved the pursuit of two highway markers during its Monday meeting.
Wayne Harvey, president of the Summers County Historical Society, told the commission the first marker would be positioned on the Summers and Raleigh county line near Hinton and the construction of the new bridge across the mouth of Madams Creek, which will become part of the New River Parkway.
This sign will give a brief history of the founding of both counties.
A second marker will note significant historic happenings.
Harvey proposes the second sign highlight Mary Draper Ingles’ escape from Indian captivity in 1755 on one side and Chief Justice John Marshall’s exploring expedition along the New and Greenbrier rivers in 1812 or other similar significant events.
“We hope signs of this nature will add value to the town and increase tourism interest for future generations,” said Harvey.
The state owns suitable land near the bridge where these markers could be located, he added.
Harvey plans to also seek permission from the Raleigh County Commission.
