BECKLEY — A 28-year-old mother, charged with child neglect causing the death of one of her 2-year-old twin boys, is scheduled for a plea hearing today.

Brandy Smallwood, of Fairdale, had been awaiting a November trial, but will instead enter a plea at 9:30 a.m. today before Raleigh County Circuit Court Judge John A. Hutchison.

Her husband, James Travis Green, 24, also of Fairdale, pleaded guilty earlier this month to the first degree murder of his stepson, 2-year-old Graydon Morgan.

He also pleaded guilty to child abuse resulting in injury toward Graydon’s twin brother Zeke.

Green now faces life in prison with mercy, as well as an additional two to 10 years for child abuse. He will be eligible for parole after he has served 15 years.

Green will be sentenced at 9 a.m. Jan. 14 by Hutchison.

West Virginia State Police responded to a call from neighbors Feb. 8 about an unresponsive and bloody toddler.

Graydon’s list of injuries was extensive, including traumatic injuries to the face and neck, brain hemorrhaging and cigarette burns.

He was taken to Raleigh General Hospital, then to Women and Children’s Hospital in Charleston, where he died as a result of his injuries.

Both State Police officials and the Raleigh County Prosecutor’s Office report that Smallwood and Green’s prescription drug abuse was a factor in Graydon’s death.
