Sophia cleanup day planned; volunteers needed

SOPHIA — The Sophia Blueprint Committee will have a weed-whacking and trash cleanup party at 1 p.m. Saturday.

Volunteers are needed for the project, which is part of the township’s performance agenda for the Hub of West Virginia.

Participants will meet at 1 p.m. in the parking lot on Main Street. Sherrie Hunter of the Raleigh County Solid Waste Authority has agreed to provide the necessary tools for the cleanup.

The Blueprint Committee also has plans to develop Patriot Park, and those also will begin this Saturday as participants will clear ground at Sophia’s eastern area at Independence and Coal City Road. The new park also will serve as a gateway for future revitalization plans.

Participants will be given the opportunity to be part of the artwork on Commitment Wall Spring of 2014 on Main Street. Commitment Wall is a planned mural scheduled for spring. Volunteers’ handprints will be the leaves on the mural’s trees.
