Ace adds paintball fields

From staff reports

— ACE Adventure Resort will open two new paintball fields built this spring with local use and local history in mind.

More than 2,000 railroad ties have been recycled for use in construction of bunkers and other field structures, advancing green building methods at the resort and recalling the role of railroads in the New River Gorge.

According to project supervisor Brandon Shaw, officials intend for the complex to serve local and in-state residents as well as the thousands of out-of-state guests the resort traditionally attracts through whitewater rafting.

“One of our chief goals was to build a high-end paintball complex in this part of West Virginia — one that could accommodate families and informal groups and host competitive league events as well,” Shaw said.

The fields will include spectator areas and a paintball center in the resort’s new camp store, through which air refills and equipment rentals will be managed.

The complex is being developed near the Mountain Top Campground on the upland area of the 1,500-acre adventure resort, where a new disc-golf course had recently been completed.

The paintball facilities are scheduled to open in late April and early May.

Shaw said resort officials plan to expand the complex, depending upon its initial success.

The addition of paintball fields is one of several landmark developments at the resort, which last year hosted a record-breaking zip-line competition on its mile-long canopy course along the rim of the New River Gorge.

Established in 1981 as American-Canadian Expeditions, ACE hosts more than 50,000 rafters annually on the New and Gauley rivers and offers more than a dozen additional outdoor-recreation venues, including zip-lining, rock climbing, and ATV touring.
