Yom HaShoah: Holocaust Day of Remembrance will be observed at 1 p.m. Sunday at Carter Hall at the University of Charleston-Beckley campus.
Temple Beth El’s student rabbi Jessica Wainer and Congregation Ahavath Sholom’s student rabbi Marina Tecktiel, both of Hebrew Union College in Cincinnati, will host the event and Daniel Kereth, of Bluefield, plans to speak about his Holocaust experience.
A memorial service will conclude the program. Holocaust survivor Max Lewin donated the money to build the Bell Tower at UC-Beckley (formerly Mountain State University) in remembrance of family members killed in the Holocaust.
Lewin passed away in 2002, but every year since 1995, the ringing of the Lewin Bell Tower has marked the beginning of Yom HaShoah, the Holocaust Day of Remembrance.
