One dead, another injured in Sunday car accident

A fatal wreck in Monroe County Sunday morning killed one person and seriously injured another, according to the Monroe County Sheriff’s Department.

Police report that a two-vehicle crash occurred just before noon on U.S. 219, north of Peterstown.

A northbound Chevrolet Tracker driven by 48-year-old Randy H. Blankenship of Narrows, Va., crossed the center line into the southbound lane, colliding with a Chevrolet Suburban driven by Charles R. Franklin, 55, of Lindside.

Blankenship was dead at the scene while Franklin was airlifted to Roanoke, Va., Memorial Hospital, police said.

Franklin was listed in critical condition late Sunday and police had not received an update as of Monday evening.

The accident is being investigated by the Monroe County Sheriff’s Department, assisted by the West Virginia State Police. Members of the Peterstown, Lindside and Ballard fire departments and Union Rescue and Monroe County Medic 1 responded to the scene.
