BAF project to offer opportunities to give

— “Everyone Can Be a Philanthropist” underscores the community foundation role of providing a conduit for individuals to pursue their charitable intent. Regardless of our social or economic backgrounds, humans possess an inherent desire to support a need in their community.

Implemented in recognition of Beckley Area Foundation’s 25th anniversary, the “Everyone Can Be A Philanthropist” project will focus on a number of giving opportunities. The project will kick off at BAF’s gift of music to the community, its 24th annual free Labor Day Pops Concert at 7 p.m. Sept. 6 at the Woodrow Wilson High School Auditorium.

Although the concert is free, attendees are encouraged to recycle unused glasses and cell phones at the event.

The glasses will benefit the “Lions Recycle for Sight” program of Raleigh County Lions Clubs. These unused eyeglasses can help children and adults enjoy a better quality of life through improved vision.

Founded by teenagers Robbie and Brittany Bergquist from Norwell, Mass., “Cell Phones for Soldiers” turns old cell phones into prepaid calling cards for U.S. troops stationed overseas.

Helen Keller once stated, “Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much.” Join in the effort to do more. Care, give, recycle … be a philanthropist!
