Two events set to highlight Lewis Theatre projector campaign

Community and worldwide attention focuses on the Historic Lewis Theatre this weekend.

Following First Friday, at 9 p.m., two bands are performing with admission on a sliding scale from $10-30.

Saturday evening at 7 is the world premiere of Road Trip to History: Lewisburg, a half-hour documentary, created by Oak Tree Productions for PBS. There is no admission charge, with donations welcome. All proceeds benefit “Help Project the Lewis Theatre into the Future”.

The Kickstarter.com campaign is all or nothing. The project must raise $39,000 by Sunday, Nov. 3 at 11:04 a.m. to supplement what the local owners have been able to set aside throughout the six years of operating the Lewis to replace the projector and sound system.

As of this writing, 171 backers pledged over $26,000. The upgrade expense is $60-70,000. Pledges start at just $1, and there are Lewis rewards for amounts of $25 and above. The theatre is an anchor of historic downtown, locally owned, family run and celebrates a 75th diamond anniversary next year.

Lawless Brown plays ‘rock, funk, reggae with a little soul’. This new band makes its Lewisburg debut, with Neil Jones, Dan Freeman, Billy Ayers, Charlie Hatcher, Birch Graves, and Brian Carr. Possum Holler Glee Club’s ‘genre-jumping, feel good party music’ has foundations in old time blues and folk. Members are Dan Freeman, Jason Johans, Jay Hayes, Charlie Hatcher, and Brian Carr. Movie themed costumes are encouraged, and prizes will be awarded. Food and beverages will be available.

Road Trip to History: Lewisburg, with an introduction by Mayor John Manchester, includes a reception following the showing. Narrators of the film include the Mayor, Sarah Elkins and Mike Kidd. Devin Preston will perform a humorous monologue of film history, called ‘brilliant’ after its recent opening.

The Lewis is at 113 N Court St.
