YMCA kicks off annual fundraising campaign

BECKLEY — The YMCA of Southern West Virginia has officially kicked off its 26th annual campaign to raise at least $100,000 for the Open Doors Membership and youth-related programs while honoring this year’s Spirit of Beckley recipient Nancy Kissinger.

More than 200 volunteers attended the kick-off breakfast Tuesday morning at Black Knight Country Club, said Jay Rist, YMCA of Southern West Virginia CEO. During the breakfast, volunteers collected cards that will assist them in contacting and collecting donations from the community throughout the month.

Rist said there was a “strong” turnout and support for the “worthy cause.” Kissinger was chosen as the 2012 Spirit of Beckley recipient for her commitment to making the area a better place to live and work. The fundraising will provide scholarships to families and children in order to help them obtain memberships to the Y, and access to programs and services regardless of economic status.

The Dec. 3 Spirit of Beckley dinner will begin with a 6 p.m. reception at the Beckley-Raleigh County Convention Center. The program will follow at 7 p.m.
