BECKLEY — Beckley Police welcomed a new officer to the department Tuesday morning.

Joseph J. Stewart was sworn in by Beckley Mayor Emmett Pugh at City Hall before friends and family.

Stewart grew up in the East Park area of Beckley and is a graduate of the West Virginia State Police Academy. He has been working as a police officer in Hinton since 2006.

He will complete an eight-week field training program during which he will train with a veteran officer before working on his own.

BPD currently has 49 officers who serve the community, according to Chief Tim Deems.

“The employees and members of the Beckley Police Department are dedicated to creating and preserving an environment that offers a sense of security, safety and well-being to all people within the community.”
