Library accepting pet supplies for fines

BECKLEY — Have you been avoiding coming to your local library because of overdue fines? Do you wish you could once again enjoy your library privileges and check out that latest best seller or hit movie, or enjoy free computer access? Do you have a soft spot in your heart for homeless pets and wish there was a way to help them out?

 “Next week is your chance to wipe those fines AND help out our local humane society.” said Library Director Amy Lilly. “We hope many patrons will take advantage of this unique opportunity!”

In support of Responsible Pet Owners Month, Raleigh County Public Libraries will be cooperating with the Humane Society of Raleigh County by sponsoring a “pet items for fines” swap Feb. 19-23. On these days you can donate the pet supply items listed below and have overdue fines reduced or removed from your library record.

One bag of dry pet food will equal $7 in waived fines; one can of dog food equals $2 in waived fines; two cans of cat food equals $2 in waived fines and one bag of kitty litter equals $5 in waived fines

Just bring your pet items and library card (or your photo ID if you’ve lost your card) to any of the four Raleigh County Library branches. This offer is good for removal of overdue fines and payment for replacement library cards only. It cannot be applied as a credit or refund and will not cover the replacement cost of lost books.

Those without fines can still bring in a donation of items which will be included in the library’s delivery to the shelter.

The Humane Society of Raleigh County (aka the Animal Shelter) at 325 Grey Flats Road is always in need of various supplies; call 304-253-8921, Tuesday through Saturday, 11 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. for more information.

All Raleigh County libraries will be closed Monday for Presidents’ Day, but open regular hours the rest of the week.
