New River CTC open house today in Ghent

The Register-Herald

New River Community and Technical College will host an open house at the Advanced Technology Center in Ghent today from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. to help dislocated coal workers and their families explore short-term training programs available to help them re-enter the workforce as quickly as possible.

Programs offered at the Advanced Technology Center include line service mechanic, welding, industrial technology, residential energy management, CDL, entrepreneurship, green building (which incorporates construction, plumbing, masonry and HVAC) and auto/diesel mechanic.

“The advantage of enrolling in our programs is that we take the difficult and discouraging search out of the equation because we are preparing individuals for careers where employers are seeking them,” said Lisa M. Hatcher, dean of the ATC.

Hatcher added that union and non-union workers who were laid off after March 1, 2012, and their families may qualify for $5,000 to pay for the training from a grant received by the UMWA Career Center.
