A pickup truck equipped with emergency red lights and a siren ran another pickup off the road and into another vehicle Wednesday in Sophia and fled the scene, police said.
Shortly before the accident, two fire departments were called to a vehicle fire in nearby Coal City, but police were not sure if there was a connection.
The accident occurred around 2 p.m. on Robert C. Byrd Drive near Lester Square, Sophia Police Chief Tim Sweeney said.
The driver of the Ford pickup that was forced off the road and four witnesses told police a white pickup came through the area with its lights and siren activated, ran the Ford off the road and left the scene.
The Ford then struck a Dodge Stratus and “demolished” a guard rail, Sweeney said. The driver was able to speak before he was taken to Raleigh General Hospital.
The Stratus’ female driver was not hurt.
Anyone with information about the accident is encouraged to call the Sophia Police Department at 304-683-3331 or Crime Stoppers at 304-255-7867.
