Work to resume on Ewart Avenue stormwater site

By Wendy Holdren

— In approximately two weeks, construction will begin again on the Ewart Avenue stormwater management facility, according to Beckley Sanitary Board Operations Manager Jeremiah Johnson.

After construction reconvenes, Johnson estimated the stormwater detention pond will be complete within six to eight weeks.

He said the delays in the $771,000 project have been weather-related.

The detention pond will help reduce flooding in the area of Ewart Avenue and Robert C. Byrd Drive, known as the Ewart Avenue watershed.

The Southern Conservation District, West Virginia Conservation Agency and Beckley Sanitary Board had been working toward this project together.

Although the pond is not expected to entirely prevent flooding, it is anticipated to help mitigate the problem at the intersection.

Once the structure is complete, its ownership will be transferred to the Sanitary Board, which will assume long-term operation and maintenance as part of the stormwater utility.
