A Raleigh County man is being charged with attempted first degree murder after a stabbing incident Friday evening, according to Beckley Police Department.
Michael Dale Wafford, 38, of Eccles, is being held at Southern Regional Jail on $25,000 bond for allegedly stabbing James Tate Jr., 34, of Beckley.
Detective M.G. Bragg said Beckley Police responded to a stabbing call around 6 p.m. Friday near Harvey’s at the Beckley Plaza.
When officers arrived, they found one victim, Tate, who had been stabbed multiple times in the abdomen and arm and around his neck. Bragg said Tate was bleeding profusely and he was transported to Raleigh General Hospital when EMS arrived.
Witnesses identified Wafford, who fled the scene in a car toward Pinewood Drive, Bragg said. Beckley Police had a seatbelt checkpoint set up on Pinewood Drive, so as he drove into that area, officers stopped him and took him into custody.
Bragg said the incident stemmed over Wafford approaching an ex-girlfriend inside Harvey’s. He was causing a scene and attempted to assault her when Tate tried to intervene, Bragg addd. Tate escorted Wafford outside, where a physical altercation began and Wafford allegedly attacked him with a knife, the officer said.
Wafford was charged with attempted first degree murder, malicious wounding and domestic assault. Tate is reportedly in stable condition.
