The first days of spring will offer an opportunity to enjoy nature and support a cause as part of Fayetteville High School’s Adventure Club’s first-ever Fun Run event Saturday.
Those looking for an invigorating morning are invited to take part in a 1-mile Fun Run/Walk or a 5-mile trail race beginning at 10 a.m. at Fayetteville Town Park.
The Adventure Club, headed up by Fayetteville High School teachers Joe DeGaetano, Shane Groves, Shea Wells and Keith Dougherty, seeks to get local kids involved in the many outdoor sports offered in the area, including rock climbing, mountain biking, hiking, kayaking and more.
“We all moved here from different parts of the country for the outdoors sports,” said DeGaetano. “Our vision for this club is to get kids active and expose them to what activities are available in their backyard.”
Race entrance fees, $10 for individuals and $20 for families, will go directly into the club’s budget for funding out-of-school field trips, including zip-lining, mountain biking, climbing and lake excursions.
DeGaetano said the club also wants to eventually buy a few kayaks, paddle boards and a fleet of mountain bikes of its own to further enrich the club’s programming.
The top three men and women competitors in each race will be awarded gift certificates from various Fayetteville restaurants including Diogi’s Mexican Grill, Pies and Pints, Secret Sandwich Society, Gumbo’s Cajun Res-taurant and Cathedral Café. Handcrafted pottery from local artisans is also up for grabs.
Post-race snacks and aid stations will be available, and courses will run along the New River Gorge National River trails.
Registration begins at 9 a.m. at Fayetteville Town Park.
