Beckley Elementary is geared up for an exciting week celebrating Black History Month.
Second-grade teacher Beatrice Pannell explained that more than 200 parents have already signed up to attend today’s Soul Food Luncheon, which focuses on creating a family-style atmosphere at school.
Teachers will be decorating their doors this week with elements of black history, culture and historical figures.
Pannell said the week will culminate with a visit from the traditionally black female sorority Delta Sigma Theta at 1:15 p.m. Friday. Volunteers from this civic organization will read appropriately themed books to Beckley Elementary students.
Lastly, the Trap Hill Middle School choir will visit and perform music rooted in black culture, such as spirituals, she said.
“In my class, our curriculum includes two or three stories about Afri-can-Americans like George Washington Carver, who struggled to achieve their goals and go on to do great things. But having these activities lets students be a part of a black history celebration, not just be on the outside looking in,” she said.
This gives students the chance to see “we have achieved and anything is attainable because our ancestors have been scientists and inventors,” she added.
