Governor’s office announces Region I energy efficiency projects

Gov. Joe Manchin Tuesday announced funding totaling $790,411.11 for energy efficiency projects in the Region I Planning and Development Council, which covers McDowell, Mercer, Monroe, Raleigh, Summers and Wyoming counties.

The projects will be funded through the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant supported by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.

“Reducing energy use in city and county government facilities means energy cost savings,” Manchin said. “When we conserve energy it is a win-win, for our environment and for our taxpayers because the cost of our government is reduced.”

Cities receiving grants include:

- Mullens, $47,868, funds will assist in increasing energy efficiency at the City Hall by providing $33,166 for an HVAC system upgrade and $14,702 for the replacement of the existing fluorescent and incandescent lighting.

- Monroe County Commission, $89,521.52, funds will be utilized to upgrade fluorescent lighting at the county courthouse ($16,951), the E-911 Center ($4,503.02) and the prosecuting attorney’s office ($5,471). The grant will also provide $38,684 to replace the boiler in the courthouse and $11,417.50 for the installation of an HVAC system in the prosecuting attorney’s office. The EECBG funding will also provide $10,130 to replace doors at the courthouse and $2,365 to replace the front door at the prosecuting attorney’s office.

- Summers County Commission, $83,800, replace the boiler at the Summers County Courthouse.

- Sophia, $35,400, project will utilize $25,000 for the replacement of the current HVAC system and $2,400 to replace six windows at Sophia Town Hall and Police Department. The grant will use $8,000 to fund the replacement of the truck bay heaters at the Town of Sophia Fire Station with more energy efficient models.

- Union, $45,000, this funding will provide $15,000 for a new HVAC system, $15,000 for lighting and $15,000 for new doors and the installation of building insulation at the Town Hall.

- Wyoming County Commission, $35,081.59, project consists of a fluorescent lighting upgrade of the Wyoming County Courthouse Annex.
