St. Stephen’s planning a reading camp July 22-26

St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church will host a reading camp July 22-26 from 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. for children who have difficulty reading.

The church is located at 200 Virginia Street, Beckley.

“We feel there is a great need in our community for a reading camp like this and we are pleased that we are going to be able to be a part of this,” said Dana Henderson, who is organizing the camp along with Vanessa Covington.

The camp is for children who have difficulty reading who will be going into the second and third grades, and those going into or repeating the fourth grade.

The theme of the camp is “Daisy Dawson is on Her Way!”, a book by Steve Voake.

Children who sign up for the camp will be fed breakfast, lunch and two snacks throughout the day. There will also be several activities, including working with certified teachers in a fun environment on different aspects of reading.

There will be arts and crafts, swimming, nature walks, a field trip to the Youth Museum and Exhibition Coal Mine and a visit from a West Virginia author, who will read to the kids.

The last day to sign kids up for the camp is July 14, and training for volunteers and teachers will be July 20 at 10 a.m.

Anyone wanting more information about signing up for the camp or volunteering, should contact Henderson at 304-253-9672 or e-mail
