Dusting off your used books and donating them to Newspapers in Education, a community-based literacy program, can help expose area school children to practical reading at an early age.
The books that The Register-Herald gather will be sold at a Crossroads Mall book sale on Oct. 29-31 and Nov. 5-7. Funds raised through sale of the donated books enable the newspaper to provide papers to area schools. Teachers use the newspapers to empower their students to locate information and stay abreast of local events, in addition to boosting their reading comprehension skills.
If you are looking to clear out some of your book clutter, bring them to the one of the various drop-off locations, including The Register-Herald, Wyoming County Report in Pineville, Fayette Tribune in Oak Hill, YMCA of Southern West Virginia, Fayetteville Wal-Mart and Kroger stores in Hinton, Beaver, Lewisburg, Rainelle, Beckley Crossing and Oak Hill.
Donations will be accepted through Oct. 22. All used books are welcome except textbooks and encyclopedias.
