AVONDALE — A McDowell County ambulance driver transporting a patient to a hospital was killed Wednesday when the ambulance was involved in a single-vehicle accident in Avondale, officials said.

The McDowell County Emergency Ambulance Authority identified the victim as James Bailey, 36, of Bradshaw.

The accident occurred around 3 a.m. on W.Va. 80. The ambulance was transporting a patient from the patient’s residence in English to Welch Community Hospital.

The patient sustained minor injuries in the accident, while a family member accompanying the patient was flown to a Charleston hospital for treatment of injuries, officials said.

A fourth person in the ambulance, EMS attendant Kevin Brooks, was transported to a local hospital for evaluation. His injuries were not life-threatening.

Bailey had been employed by the McDowell ambulance authority since November 2009, officials said. He is survived by two children.

The accident is being investigated by the McDowell sheriff’s office.
