Jordan’s Chapel Christmas program scheduled Saturday

PIPESTEM — Jordan’s Chapel Christmas program, “The Christmas Message Through Music,” will take attendees back to a simpler time when traditional carols were sung around a wood stove.

Event coordinator Bonnie Young said the public is welcome to attend the service at 7 p.m. Saturday at Jordan’s Chapel in the Summers County community of True.

“This program has been an old, familiar and cherished tradition for many years, and one that many families, friends, and neighbors gather for at Christmas,” said Young. “It makes Christmas for a lot of our elderly.”

Young said it is a blessing the old church, built in 1852, is still standing.

The program will be an evening of music sung by candle light with candle holders hand made by Howard Albert, who attended the church as a small boy.

The church’s wood stove will keep the singers toasty as well as warm their hearts and soul, she said.

“Folks still travel for many miles to share a warm friendly handshake or hug from friends and warm smiles glisten throughout the quaint little room,” Young described. “Everyone wants to chat as they sit by the old wood burning stove.”

Jordan’s Chapel was the first site in Summers County to be placed on the National Register of Historic Places.

The church has also been designated as the 309th Historic Methodist Place and is additionally historically significant for being used as a shelter and hospital for Confederate soldiers during long marches between Union to Flat Top during the Civil War.

Jordan’s Chapel is located on True Road off County Route 18 near Pipestem.
